Liz McDowell has a Bachelor of Social Work Degree and a Master of Social Work degree. Liz first started with Catholic Charities as an intern through her Social Work program then joined Catholic Charities full time as a Family Case Manager. She was promoted to Program Manager and led the Greenville Office as it expanded services. In 2022, Liz was promoted to Regional Director and continues to work tirelessly tirelessly to drive the growth of Catholic Charities in the Tar River Region.

Maria has served on the Tar River Regional team for a total of 26 years. During her time as an Office Manager, Maria has held multiple roles including, immigration assistant and women’s group leader, a title she held for 14 years. Maria enjoys her work at Catholic Charities because she loves helping people find solutions to everyday challenges in life, as well as working through the usual challenges that come with being a bookkeeper. In the Tar River Region, Maria serves as an interpreter and a vital point of contact for the Spanish Speaking families that reach out to the office daily. Outside of work, Maria loves photography, gardening, and all things art and adventure. Maria’s favorite adventure is having fun with her granddaughter, Rosemary.
Kim Gaskins- Family Case Manager
Kim joined the Tar River regional team as Family Case Manager in August 2021. She obtained her Master of Social Work degree from East Carolina University in 2020 after completing her Bachelor of Social Work program in 2016. Prior to joining the Catholic Charities team, Kim worked with individuals and families within the community in obtaining employment and reaching their goals of self-sufficiency through the Community Service Block Grant (CSBG) program with Greene Lamp Community Action. Kim is a native “Greenville-ian” and spends her days off with family, friends, and her Shih poo, Bear.
David Rohrer- Immigration Services DOJ Accredited Representative
David joined the Immigration Legal Services program in April 2021, having volunteered with Catholic Charities for five years. Previously he spent 30 years in finance and IT management working for Black & Decker and GlaxoSmithKline. David is thrilled to be part of an organization that provides help and creates hope while respecting the dignity of those with few resources. In addition, he enjoys using Spanish and working cross-culturally, working in an atmosphere of teamwork and collaboration, and learning the intricacies of immigration law. Most important of all, Catholic Charities provides David the opportunity to give back to society, to work for social justice, and to be inspired by the deep faith of others.
Octavia Burney. – Counseling Intern
Octavia Burney is a Virginia native. She holds a bachelor’s degree in interdisciplinary studies with a concentration in psychology from Liberty University. She is currently pursuing a master’s in clinical social work from Virginia Commonwealth University. Before working at Catholic Charities, Octavia had over twenty years of experience in healthcare and infectious disease, as well as, two years of experience in crisis counseling. Octavia joined Catholic Charities as an MSW intern in August of 2023. In addition to her internship, on January 2, 2024, Octavia started assisting with the Tar River HOP program part-time. Octavia is a burn survivor and shares her experiences to encourage and bring awareness to others. Octavia enjoys spending time with family, friends, and being involved in her local church.
