It was a balmy evening on Friday, July 29th for the Catholic Charities Cans for Charity event with the Carolina Mudcats. This was the second game of the two part “Pitch in for Charity” series that Catholic Charities organized over the summer. Severe storms, which delivered excessive rainfall in parts of Wake and Durham Counties in mid-July caused flash floods that forced more than a hundred families out of their homes. In response to the flooding, the American Red Cross opened a shelter for four days at Hillside High School in Durham, to assist families with lodging and food. On Friday, July 29th, Catholic Charities will be hosting a “Cans for Charity” game with the Carolina Mudcats. Fans who donate three cans of food at the game will receive a $3 discount on the $10 box seat special. Catholic Charities has teamed up with the Durham Bulls and Carolina Mudcats baseball teams this summer for two special fundraising nights. The first event took place on Monday, June 20, with approximately 500 people from throughout the diocese attending the Durham Bulls vs. Charlotte Knights baseball game in Durham. On Tuesday, June 30, 2015, Oak City Outreach Center (OCOC) in downtown Raleigh held a thank-you event for the supporters of the center, specifically the City of Raleigh and the partner agency food providers and volunteers. Local dignitaries, volunteers, donors, and all Raleigh Deanery priests were invited to the event. The center, which provides three meals a day on Saturdays and Sundays, opened in June 2014. The need the center serves, though, goes back decades… Read More
On Monday, March 23rd, three individuals were killed and one was injured when the scaffolding equipment they were working on collapsed at a construction site in downtown Raleigh. Following the accident, there was an outpouring of support from the community to help the families who were impacted by this tragic accident.
