On Tuesday, June 3, 2014, more than 50 supporters of Catholic Charities attended its Canned Food Drive at Five County Stadium in Zebulon, home to the Carolina Mudcats baseball team. Each person who donated three cans at the gate received a coupon that saved them three dollars on their box seat ticket.
Bishop Michael F. Burbidge helped collect cans at the main gate, then joined eleven seminarians inside the stadium as guests of the Carolina Mudcats. Under a partly cloudy sky, Catholic Charities Executive Director Gary Skinner got the evening off to a great start by throwing a perfect strike for the ceremonial first pitch. Catholic Charities supporters then enjoyed the warm summer evening and fun action on the diamond. Food collected at the stadium gates will go to the Catholic Charities food pantries of Greenville and Catholic Parish Outreach in Raleigh.
This event was also used to launch the new Catholic Charities Twitter account, @CathCharDoR. Families were encouraged to post pictures and messages of support throughout the game using #Cans4CC. Follow us on Twitter to stay current with upcoming events, services provided and many other updates.
Pictures from the event will be posted on the our Facebook page. If you have pictures from the event that you would like to share, please send them to Daniel.Altenau@raldioc.org.
