September marks National Preparedness Month (NPM), an annual campaign led by FEMA to raise awareness about the importance of disaster planning. This year’s theme, “Start a Conversation,” encourages families and communities to begin discussions on how to prepare for emergencies, ask key questions, and develop action plans.

Catholic Charities of the Diocese of Raleigh is proud to participate in this campaign, offering vital resources and education to help communities get ready for the unexpected. Lisa Perkins, CEO of Catholic Charities of the Diocese of Raleigh, is calling on staff and volunteers, individuals, families, and organizations to take the first step today.

“As we’ve seen time and time again, disasters don’t wait. They often strike when least expected, leaving lasting impacts on families and communities,” Perkins said. “By taking steps to prepare now, we can reduce those impacts and build resilience together. At Catholic Charities, we are committed to ensuring our communities have the resources and support they need to face the challenges ahead.”

With regional offices across central and eastern North Carolina, Catholic Charities is positioned to help neighbors in times of crisis. “It’s never too soon to prepare for disasters, and we’re here to assist by offering information, training, and supplies,” added Perkins.

Catholic Charities Disaster Services:

Catholic Charities’ disaster services focus on preparedness, response, and recovery. Through training and education, we offer community sessions to equip families, individuals, and volunteers to face disasters—whether personal, communal, or national. Our work encompasses every phase of the disaster cycle:

· Initial Response: During the immediate aftermath of a disaster, Catholic Charities distributes essential items such as nonperishable food, water, cleaning supplies, and hygiene products to help survivors meet their basic needs.

· Recovery: As families begin the road to recovery, Catholic Charities provides financial assistance and disaster case management services to help individuals obtain stable housing and rebuild their lives.

· Ongoing Support: As a partner of Catholic Charities USA, we offer long-term recovery support and humanitarian aid to communities nationwide.

How to Prepare:

Catholic Charities encourages everyone to take proactive steps to ensure they’re ready for a disaster:

· Stay Informed: Keep up to date on storm warnings, emergency alerts, and evacuation orders using TV, radio, or online resources.

· Store Supplies: Prepare for potential power outages or limited transportation access by stocking up on flashlights, batteries, blankets, prescriptions, first aid kits, food, and water.

· Protect Property: Secure your home against potential wind or water damage. Identify and store important documents and personal items in a safe, accessible location.

· Evacuation and Shelter-in-Place: Plan in case of an evacuation order. Leave early and follow evacuation routes. If advised to shelter in place, stay indoors until it is safe to leave.
